This cute little wine shop with friendly staff has some pretty amazing wines.  They don't carry too many, but what they do have is awesome.  I especially enjoyed the Viogner and the Merlot/Cab Sauv blend.  They do charge for tasting, which I find annoying, and I usually only expect to see this in the larger wineries, but you get it back if you buy something.  And with the wines they have available, you will want to buy something.  I don't think they had anything that wasn't available for tasting when I went.  There may have been one or two, but everything I wanted to try was open.  About $20 a bottle.  The little tasting room is quaint.

They hold fun sounding events and wine and dinner parties which I hope to check out.

Sipping 2009's best B.C. reds By Jurgen Gothe

Can’t make any decent red wines in B.C., they used to say, the ubiquitous they who know nothing and expound on everything. Rubbish, said the winemakers, and set out to prove them wrong. They soon did, and here’s my proof, based on tastings from the past 12 months.

This is the annual BOYs list—Best of the Year, domestic reds. It’s $15 to $65 per bottle for the pleasure, and pleasures there are aplenty.

Township 7 Merlot 2006 ($24.99)
Multimedal winner that has a lot of life left in it, if you were savvy enough to lay some in. Try it with chocolate and fleur de sel.

Best white wines this year hint at what's to come By Jurgen Gothe

More BOYs today, as we round up favourites from the past 12 months in this Best of the Year exercise. This week, domestic whites under $20. Quantities of many were limited. This isn’t meant to be a shopping list but, rather, a list of what was great in the past year. It’s always worth keeping an eye out for new vintages of a particular favourite when they’re released.

Township 7 Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (Sold Out - 2008 Available)
SB reaches me as more of a food wine than a sipping wine, and this doesn’t disappoint, as it applies itself to all sorts of dishes, from prawn skewers with kale and prosciutto to hearty bouillabaisse (with a splash of white balsamic in at the end) to Key lime pie.

Township 7 Vineyards & Winery 2007 Chardonnay ($19.99, #726521)

Back to blanc for wine No. 3. With locations in both Langley and Naramata, Township 7 has the province covered. Their 2007 Chardonnay was actually released in February, after a long process of barrel fermentation, nine months' aging in French and American oak barrels, and six months spent maturing in the cellar. The end result is drinking very nicely now. With tropical fruit complemented by fig and toasty oak, it leans to the richer side of the Chardonnay spectrum, with a nice baking-spice finish. Township 7 WInery is a small family winery in South Langley. They have 6 day a week wine tasting, and really amazing selections. Not a fancy wine type myself, but certainly a fan of this experience and the homey feeling. Living in the area it is easy for us to stop by and pick up a bottle on our way to dinner parties or even for ourselves.
The little on site cabin/store/tasting bar is lovely and the staff are super helpful.
On Easter weekend they host an egg hunt for kids among the vines, while parents enjoy tasting. This is the single most civilized thing I have ever done.... happy children, and we drink wine... LOVE IT!!! signed Inga K. Aldergrove, BC.

Spring 2009 Wine Press Northwest

Township 7 Vineyards & Winery 2005 Merlot, Okanagan Valley, 1,200 cases, 13.9% alc., $25 CDN

Outstanding! It's not often you'll see a winery on British Columbia's Naramata Bench release a Merlot with this level of production and such quality. There's a greeting of cherries, sarsaparilla and fresh-ground black pepper. The pour offers raspberries and cranberries with bright acidity, balanced tannins and some cocoa powder in the finish. It's neither too little nor too much, making it a fine food wine from ribs to a ribeye. Full story, click here.

Celebrating B.C.'s best winemakers
There is much to be proud of from our province's vineyards
Published: Saturday, October 20, 2007

Thanks to Anthony Gismondi, the Vancouver Sun's wine expert, for recognizing Township 7's Syrah in his Best of BC review.  His article "Celebrating BC's Best Winemakers" states, "Township has gone through a number of changes of late but one constant is its smoky sausage, peppery, spicy, leather, black berry scented syrah with its spicy, licorice, floral, roasted coffee flavours and warm, peppery, leather mineral finish.  I love the finesse here and the hints of Northern Rhone.  An excellent interpretation of B.C. Syrah."

Wine - 2003 Township 7 Cellars Seven Stars Sparkling Wine
moreisless.ca - Feb. 20, 2007 Posted by Graham

What can I say?.. When I picked up this bottle of wine, I really didn’t know what to expect. I know Bradley Cooper, winemaker for Township 7 is a fan of sparkling wine and that this wine has started to pick up something of a cult following among local wine lovers, but BC bubbly has been a bit of a hit-and-miss undertaking for me in recent years.

I picked this up last week and took it out to Graham’s house in the ‘burbs to share with him and his lovely wife, Leah. It’s 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, and the minute we poured it we knew it was something different in terms of BC sparklers. It had beautifully intense straw yellow colour with loads of lively bubbles.

Well, my fears of another so-so bottle of BC bubbly were quickly dispelled with my first glass of this wine. I stuck my nose into the glass and was met with aromas of toasted almonds laced with honey. It had a yummy buttery feel in the mouth, with crisp citrus and round fruit flavours. The finish was all honey and citrus and that certain je ne sais quoi which makes bubbly so much fun. Put simply, this is a really good bottle of sparkling wine.

Graham thought it was as good if not better than the Gloria Ferrer he reviewed a while back (which the Spectator gave 90). We both thought it had the lush feel of a French Champagne, rather than the crisp acidity of a BC sparkler. In a blind tasting, we agreed that it would difficult to pin this as a bottle of BC bubbly.

Kudos to Bradley and T7 for their work on this one.

April, 2006 Pocket Wineries Produce Rocket Reds
The Georgia Straight – April 13, 2006

Jurgen Gothe writes: “Some weeks ago, we looked at the range of Chardonnays from Township 7, and people said, “Yeah, but it’s the reds that really shine.” Well, I know that. There just wasn’t enough space to do them justice, so here’s one, for now: Syrah 2003 ($24.90), from a total output of 357 cases. Last time I checked, there were still a few boxes available. And once again, securing supply would make sense, especially if you are doing anything remotely elegant on the barbecue this summer. The promised cherries and prune plums and waft of freshly ground pepper assail the nose (in the nicest possible way), the fruit glides over the palate, all round and rich; the fact it’s unfiltered gives it even darker hues in the glass, and the tannins are tamed right down into softness. Pleasure and plenty of it.”

B.C. is on the Right Track to Creating World-Class Chardonnays
Vancouver Sun – April 22, 2006

Anthony Gismondi writes: “This week we look at six local Chardonnays headed in the right direction that frankly, when tasted blind, would do well anywhere in the world… At Township 7, owner Gwen and Corey Coleman are making a flavourful … Un-Oaked Chardonnay. The un-oaked moniker prepares you for a dry, fresh, fruity white with green apple, mineral, citrus and green peach flavours. The finish hints of mineral, creamy lees and finesse.”

September, 2005 Vancouver Wine Media Have High Praise for Township 7 Vineyards & Winery 2004 Chardonnay and 2003 Merlot

In the September 2005 issue of Wine Access, a national magazine devoted to wine and food, Vancouver writer Tony Gismondi awarded the Township 7 Vineyards 7 Winery 2004 Chardonnay with an 88 point rating.  His comments about the wine included “well done…round and elegant…soft but fresh.”  Earlier in the year, Mr. Gismondi highlighted the 2004 Chardonnay as his B.C. Wine of the Week, suggesting that the wine “offers peachy, melon, green apple scented fruit in a round and elegant style.  The flavours are an enticing mix of fresh grapefruit rind, mineral, green apple and honey notes.”  He also suggested that “Both their Merlot and Chardonnay have been widely sought after and if you are lucky enough to find a bottle of Syrah at the winery, be sure to snag it.”

More recently, wine writer Christina Burridge wrote an article entitled “25 B.C. Benchmarks” in Vancouver Magazine’s 2006 Eating and Drinking Guide, and included the Township 7 Vineyards 7 Winery 2003 Merlot in her collection (previous vintages of the Township 7 Merlot have also been recognized in this prestigious list).  Christina Burridge mentions that the Township 7 Vineyards & Winery 2003 Merlot is “a very tasty wine, lots of plum and spice, with a nice stony earthiness, food friendly without being overbearing.”  We are obviously very pleased to have had our Merlot recognized yet again as one of the best wines produced in British Columbia.
