Merlot 2008

Tasting Notes:

Merlot from five different vineyards is truly a winemaker’s luxury.  After lengthy blending sessions we then extended our traditional 22 month barrel aging program to 26 months to allow more maturation before bottling; thereby crafting an excellent reflection of the vintage.  Rich plum, chocolate shavings and spiced berry in the nose.  Dried cherry, cola and leather in the palate.  Superb finish with hints of exotic spice. Great early structure; drink with robust meat dishes or intense dark chocolate.  Cellar potential for at least 10 years.

Vintage Report

The climate in the 2008 growing season was optimal.  Though winter was longer than normal, ideal spring and summer weather was followed by a long, temperate and dry fall harvest.  These quintessential Okanagan conditions produced stellar fruit with optimum ripeness and flavour development.  Slightly lower yields saw increased quality levels from our growers on the Black Sage Road in Oliver where the majority of the Merlot was grown.  A very good year overall, with fruit reaching excellent maturation levels with beautifully balanced colour, flavours, tannins and acidity.

James Nevison | Taste Magazine, Fall 2011

Township 7 Merlot is a classic comfort wine. It is smooth and plush, showing gorgeous plump black cherry and berry fruit intermingling with dark chocolate, vanilla and tasty oak. Great with a roast, or a last-of-the-season barbecue.

Wonderful rich dark plummy aromas with mocha, toffee, chocolate and spice cake notes. The palate is plush and smooth echoing the spice cake, chocolate and supple dark fruit of the nose. It's full but slightly hot in the mouth and the finish lingers nicely.

Lots of tobacco and fruit on this with hints of dried fruits as well. Full and very polished, with dark chocolate and berries. Subtle and focused. Reminds me of a solid Tuscan Merlot. So good now but will keep going and going.
