This full bodied, rich Cabernet Franc is full of aromas of black cherry and cocoa tempered with tobacco and eucalyptus. The mineral laden soils of the Saddle Ridge vineyard add complexity and robustness to the palate. Extended barrel ageing in 4 French barriques developed spiciness and vanilla characteristics. Enjoy with grilled bison and roasted vegetables. This wine is best decanted as it was unfiltered and aged for 5-15 years.
This wine was crafted from the Cabernet Franc grown at Saddle Ridge Vineyard on Black Sage Road, where the sun drenched the southwest facing hillside enabling the grapes to fully ripen and the soils add to the plush fruit. A 14 day fermentation with varied cap management promotes rich fruit and tannin extraction. The wine was then aged in French barrels (50% new) for 24 months adding both spiciness and softness to the rich mouthfeel of this wine.
The 2015 season in the Okanagan Valley can be summed up in one word — fantastic. An early spring start provided the necessities for superior vine growth. July and August were very sunny and hot leading to good sugar development within the grapes and much earlier ripening than normal. We began our earliest harvest on record, on August 22, and by the end of September completed the bulk of our grape picking. September was similarly, warm and sunny with slightly cooler nights allowing for continued phenolic ripening. A harvest for the record books, was finished at our earliest date ever, October 8.
