Summertime Sangria

With this prolonged heatwave, we are craving a refreshing adult beverage to quench our thirsty palates. Sangria is just the ticket, it is pretty in the glass and the ideal drink for summer parties.  Crafted with red or white wine and packed with fresh fruit, like peaches and strawberries (or almost any combination of fruit), sangrias are simple, adaptable and delicious!

Here’s two recipes that we particularly like (with no added sugar!) to try with our 2016 Prospera Valley Gran Fondo River Road Red and 2017 Prospera Valley Gran Fondo Telegraph Trail White.  They are not only delectable wines but are for a good cause…  Proceeds from the sales of these wines will go towards Youth Development Cycling program, Escape Velocity DEVO, Vancouver’s oldest and most successful youth cycling program, whose primary purpose is the introduction and ongoing support of youth in the sport of competitive endurance-discipline cycling.

Red Wine Sangria

Our River Road Red is a predominantly Merlot based Bordeaux-style blend, which is full of aromas of black cherry, eucalyptus, and lavender. This fruit-forward wine has soft tannins and displays black cherry and cassis on the palate followed by cedar box and cocoa.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups Township 7 River Road Red wine
  • ½ cup cherry brandy
  • 1 cup cranberry juice
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • ¾ cup lime juice
  • 1 cup Sprite, or your favourite lemon-lime soda
  • Oranges
  • Raspberries
  • Cherries
  • Limes
  • Fresh mint

Method

In a large pitcher, stir together Township 7 River Road Red, cherry brandy, cranberry juice, orange juice, lime juice and Sprite. Serve chilled. Garnish with orange segments, raspberries, lime wedges and a few sprigs of fresh mint.

White Wine Sangria

Our Telegraph Trail White is a blend that creates ‘summer in a glass’ with aromas of peach, rose petal, pear and mandarin emerging. The palate is off-dry with apricot, orange rind, spice and citrus ensuring the balance between acidity and sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 3¼ cups Township 7 Telegraph Trail White Wine
  • ⅓ cup Triple Sec
  • ⅓ cup peach-flavoured brandy
  • 2 medium peaches, peeled and sliced
  • 2 medium oranges, sliced thin and crosswise
  • 1 cup sparkling orange soda
  • 1 cup ginger ale

Method
In a large serving bowl, combine all the ingredients except the orange soda and ginger ale and mix well. Refrigerate overnight. Immediately before serving, mix in the orange soda and ginger ale. We suggest for added colour and flavour mix in some thinly sliced lemons. Serve over ice.
